First Article Corporation was opened in March of 1998 by Steve Hickel, chief engineer at Phoenix Solutions Corp of New Hope, Minnesota and Brent Hickel, recently retired as a Captain in the United States Air Force. They brought numerous Undergraduate and Masters degrees in a variety of engineering sciences to the industry. Darren Hickel joined the company in July of 2000, bringing sales expertise and a BS in Business to the company.

The company is now operated by Brent Hickel, as lead engineer, scanner, modeler and main customer contact; and Darren Hickel as company accountant, sales contact and Surveyor 1200 operator. Steve Hickel remains with Phoenix Solutions and provides veteran guidance to First Article.

Brent Hickel spent an additional 7 years in the USAF reserves and retired in 2011 holding the rank of Major, USAF, retired. In his 13 years in the industry, Brent has mastered the delicate art of CAD modeling, be it in freeform modeling with GeoMagic, or solid modeling with SolidWorks. He has also become extremely familiar with a wide range of scanning equipment and is able to offer knowledge and advice when clients need guidance.
